Movie Review: Snow White and the Huntsman

Ok...first off...if the fairest in the land has buck teeth and stoner eyes with dark bags under them, then that land has some seriously ugly women.

Charlize Theron actually is pretty good as the evil queen.  The huntsman and most of the rest of the cast were just ok in this.  Kristen Stewart is so horribly miscast that I just have to scratch my head.

The script had some interesting takes on the Snow White story and I very much like how the seven dwarfs were used.  Unfortunately, it was so filled with stupid cliches and predictability (in a story that I suppose we all already knew), the few interesting parts weren't enough to make this very engaging.  I also have to say that it was fairly well directed given what the director had to work with.

But this all comes down to Snow White and Kristen Stewart.  When the star of the movie just isn't up for the task, it's hard for the movie to really succeed.  I haven't seen the Twilight movies (thankfully...and I hope to keep it that way), but given the range Stewart shows here, I can't imagine they are very good.

One last problem is at 128 minutes, this movie was probably about 30 minutes longer than it needed to be...there was a lot that could have been cut out of this film...the overly long funeral scene for the dead dwarf was really pointless considering that dwarf was only in the movie for the previous 10 minutes or so giving the audience almost no time to really have any emotional connection to the character...so as a result, you are stuck with 5 wasted minutes.  There are numerous scenes like this that just were unnecessary.

In the end, we are left with a movie that just doesn't offer anything of substance.

And why does the mirror look like a prop from the Gong Show?

1 and 1/2 stars out of 5.
